Light trimming and pruning, less than 10 percent of the tree or shrub canopy, can be done all year. It is nice to trim those shrubs in late June or so after they have exploded with growth in the spring in order to keep them under control. The best time to do major trimming and pruning is in the late fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing in the spring or in the stressful summer heat. Trimming and pruning itself is somewhat of a stressful event, so we recommend light trimming and pruning only during the spring growing season and summer to ensure proper healing.
